I work with individuals who are writing personal or family histories. When this feels daunting, it can be helpful to enlist the help of an editor. It may be that you don’t know where to start, or the opposite – so much is occurring to you that you can’t write it fast enough.
We talk initially to see what ideas you have, where you want to start and how I might help. It is a one-to-one process (including phone calls, Skype) but I have also devised a creative writing course (which I have run locally) that I draw on when writers feel stuck, perhaps need structure or when they might need inspiration in how to approach this task. The editorial services I provide are structural, copy-editing and proofreading. I can also help organise printed and digital copies so it can all be taken care of through Elbow Editorial.
An initial phone call just to talk about what you think you might need is free of charge, then we would work out a plan together. I find it is more useful to work together on a sample piece of work – perhaps some of your early thoughts or writing – then you can see if my approach is going to be helpful. I charge £30 an hour plus VAT. There is no contract but we agree each stage of the work together.
Lives come in all shapes and sizes, as do the ways of narrating them. The aim is to end with a book or a document that you feel reflects your life and your voice.
